I will never forget the first time I had donuts from Tarallucci e Vino.

My friend Dena, who is one of the sweetest people you could ever be fortunate enough to have in your life, was preparing to celebrate her thirtieth birthday. Like me, Dena loves planning her birthday, from jewelry to after-dinner drinks. She wanted advice on dresses, so she brought them over to Paula and I early one Friday morning.

And, as a girl who clearly operates on the same wavelength as us, she brought a snack.

It was our love for Dena, and a sliver of personal decency, that kept us from tearing the greasy brown bag out of her hands. The donuts were fluffy but light and, most importantly, still warm. Have you ever smelled a warm donut? It’s the sort of food memory that stays with you for life.

Several days ago, Dena dropped by to celebrate another milestone – her engagement! And how did we celebrate?

With donuts, of course.

The chocolate filled donuts were far and away my favorites, the chocolate being slightly more on the dark side. The custard filled had only the slightest hint of lemon. They were every bit as good as I remember them.

I am beyond-words-happy for Dena. Her fiancé is a wonderful man, obviously intelligent and hey – anyone who enjoys Jameson as much as (if not more than) I do is okay by me! Lots and lots of bosas (thats kisses in Arabic) for you both!!

Tarallucci e Vino can be found on the corner of 18th St and 1st Ave and is open 7 days a week. Go early, and often, for the donuts.
